Local Pickup
Intro
Local Pickup shipments are orders the customer collects in person. They live in their own sidebar lists so parcels and pickups never mix, and they finish as Picked Up instead of Shipped — with no carrier label at all. Parcel pages (Awaiting, On Hold, Shipped) and the order status pages (Awaiting, In Progress, On Hold, Fulfilled) leave pickup orders out, so each order is listed in one place. All Shipments, All Orders and Cancelled still include pickups, because those lists are meant to show everything.
Purpose
- Keep the counter queue separate from the packing bench
- Track exactly which pickups are ready vs collected, and who handed them over
- Give CS a clear answer to "is my order ready?"
Which shipments count as local pickup?
An admin turns on Activate Local Pickup under Shipments → Settings → Local Pickup (also Advanced → Local Pickup) and picks the signals: Shopify's pick-up delivery method, an empty shipping address, shipment tags, or text in the shipping line name / code / service. Matching shipments are flagged automatically and show a Local Pickup badge. Details in Shipment settings.
The order is flagged as local pickup when any of its shipments is a pickup, or when the order-level signals (empty address, shipping-line text) match — that is what moves it from the parcel order pages to Orders → Local Pickup. The flag is re-evaluated whenever the order or its shipments sync.
If a pickup order lands in the parcel queue — or vice versa — review those rules.
The lists
| List | Contents |
|---|---|
| Shipments → Local Pickup → Awaiting | Pickups still being prepared or waiting for the customer (Awaiting Local Pickup) |
| Shipments → Local Pickup → Picked Up | Completed pickups |
| All Local Pickup | Everything, for search |
| Orders → Local Pickup → Awaiting / Fulfilled / All | The same orders from the store side |
All the usual tools work here: search, filters, views, tags, columns, and Print.
Workflow
- A pickup order syncs in → its shipment appears under Local Pickup → Awaiting.
- Prepare the goods; use tags (e.g.
ready) per your process. - Open the shipment. In the Picked By card, type the staff member's name and click Save — or Save & Print to print the Local Pickup Slip in one step.
- Notify the customer through your usual channel.
- When the customer collects: verify identity / order number and hand over. Fulfil the order on Shopify (or let your process do it) — once the order is Fulfilled on the store, sync moves the shipment to Picked Up.
Local Pickup Slip
A dedicated document for the counter: store logo and name, shipment reference, Picked (the staff name from the Picked By card), customer, destination weather when the Weather app is on, notes, and an item table (Image, Item, Order #, Bin Location, Location, Qty) with a barcode. Every store gets a default; edit it under Advanced → Documents.
Merging pickups
Pickup shipments never merge with parcel shipments. Two pickups for the same customer can merge when they are for the same pickup location; with Auto Merge on, Merge Local Pickup to Local Pickup in Merge Settings must also be on or pickups are left out of suggestions.
Merge rules that compare Shipping Address fields with Must be same use the pickup location instead when every shipment in the group is a pickup (pickup orders usually have no shipping address) — same location passes, different locations fail.
