Tags
Intro
Tags are colored labels from your store’s shared tag library. On shipments they mark handling needs that status alone cannot express — fragile, cold-chain, VIP, oversize — visible right on the packing queue.
Shipments and orders use the same library (managed under Advanced → Tags) but are tagged separately: tagging an order does not tag its shipments, and vice versa.
Purpose
- Flag special handling where packers actually look — the shipment
- Build tag-based filters and views
- Feed automation and visibility rules that react to tag names
How to apply tags
From the list (one or many)
- Select shipments with the checkboxes.
- Click Tags.
- In Select Tags, search, pick chips, or create with New Tag.
- Click Apply Tags.
Manage tags without selecting anything
Tags is always enabled on the list. Click it with no shipments selected and it opens as Manage Tags — a quick place to create or delete tags without going to Advanced → Tags:
- New Tag creates a tag (name, color, active, optional group). It is available to apply straight away and appears in the Filter → Tags list.
- The trash icon next to a tag deletes it — see below.
- Inactive tags are listed here too (marked Inactive) so they can be cleaned up; they are still hidden from the apply picker.
Select shipments in the table and click Tags again to switch back to applying.
Delete a tag (with a usage check)
The trash icon is available in both Manage Tags and Select Tags for anyone with Manage Tags permission. Before anything is removed, StoresBoost checks where the tag is used and shows it in the confirmation:
- Attached to N shipments and M orders
- Used by automation rules (named) — add / remove tag actions
- Used by routines (named) — Add tags steps
If the tag is unused, Delete removes it outright. If it is in use, the button reads Delete anyway: confirming removes the tag from every shipment and order and drops it from those rules and routines (a rule whose only job was to add the tag will then do nothing). This cannot be undone — to retire a label that old shipments still carry, mark it Inactive in Advanced → Tags instead.
After a delete or a new tag, the list refreshes so tag dots and the filter list match.
From an open shipment
- Open the shipment.
- Click Tags in the toolbar.
- Adjust chips → Apply Tags.
Bulk behavior (worth knowing)
- The modal starts with tags common to all selected shipments.
- Saving applies the difference — tags unique to one shipment are preserved.
- Clearing all chips removes the common tags from the selection.
- Exclusive groups: applying one tag from an exclusive group removes the group’s other tags from that shipment (radio-button behavior).
Filter by tags
Filter → Tags → select one or more active tags → Apply Filters. Shipments with any selected tag are shown. Save it as a View for daily reuse.
Shipment tags vs order tags vs Shopify tags
| Shipment tags | Order tags | Shopify store tags | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Library | Advanced → Tags (shared) | Same shared library | Shopify Admin |
| Applied on | Shipments lists / detail | Orders | Shopify |
| Auto-shared? | No — separate from order tags | No | Not synced by the Tags feature |
If both CS (orders) and packing (shipments) need a flag, tag both — or use Advanced → Automation Rules to keep them aligned.
Managing the library
Names, colors, active state, groups, and CSV import all live in Advanced → Tags; creating and deleting is also possible from the list's Tags button (above). The full walkthrough is on Orders → Tags (same library, same rules): naming limits, inactive behavior, exclusive groups, permissions, and plan feature notes.
Practical examples
| Tag | Use on shipments |
|---|---|
fragile | Packers see it on the queue and the open shipment |
cold-chain | Combine with a view so those ship first |
oversize | Different box / rate handling at the bench |
hold-review | Keep visible while an issue is checked (status stays Awaiting) |
Merge Error Address / Merge Error Date | Applied by StoresBoost when two same-customer shipments should have merged but an address or delivery date differs — see Merge Conflict Tags. They clear themselves once the pair merges or the mismatch is fixed |
System-applied tags
Some tags are applied and removed by StoresBoost itself rather than by a person — merge conflict tags above, Add to existing — unmatched from Shipping Rates, and anything your automation rules add. They live in the same library and filter the same way. StoresBoost only ever removes tags it applied itself; a tag of the same name that you added by hand stays.
